2 Dead, Several Feared Trapped After Mohali Building Collapse; Rescue Operations Underway

Mohali, Punjab: A tragic building collapse in Mohali's Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar on Saturday evening has left at least two people dead and several others trapped under the rubble. Among the deceased is a 20-year-old woman, Drishti Verma from Himachal Pradesh, who succumbed to her injuries after being rescued in critical condition. The second victim, a male, is yet to be identified.

Rescue operations, involving the Indian Army and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), have been ongoing for over 17 hours. Officials believe at least four individuals remain trapped beneath the debris. The collapse reportedly occurred due to digging at an adjacent construction site.

A case has been filed against the building owners, Parwinder Singh and Gagandeep Singh, under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertains to culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has expressed his sorrow over the incident. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), he wrote:
"Sad news has been received that a multistorey building near Sohana in Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar (Mohali) has collapsed. The entire administration and other rescue teams have been deployed at the spot. I am in constant touch with the administration. We pray that there is no further loss of life. Action will be taken against the culprits. I appeal to people to cooperate with the authorities."
