CBSE Revamps Exam Format for Classes 11 & 12, Focuses on Applying Concepts in Real-World Scenarios

New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced a major shift in the exam format for Classes 11 and 12, starting from the academic year 2024-25. The new format will emphasize questions that assess students' ability to apply concepts to real-life situations, moving away from rote memorization.

This change aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020's focus on Competency-Based Education (CBE).

More Questions Testing Application Skills

The percentage of competency-based questions, including multiple-choice questions (MCQs), case-based questions, and source-based integrated questions, will increase from 40% to 50%. Conversely, the weightage for constructed response questions, such as short and long answers, will decrease from 40% to 30%.

Preparing Students for the 21st Century

CBSE Director (Academics) Joseph Emanuel emphasized the board's commitment to implementing NEP 2020's vision. "The aim is to create an education system that fosters critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills to equip students for the challenges of the 21st century," he stated.

This revamped exam format is expected to encourage deeper understanding and analytical abilities in students, preparing them for success in higher education and future careers.

No Changes for Classes 9 & 10

It's important to note that the exam format for Classes 9 and 10 will remain unchanged, ensuring consistency across different grade levels.
