Update | Maoists Attack Security Vehicle in Chhattisgarh: 9 Jawans Killed
Eight jawans and a driver were killed in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district as Maoists targeted their vehicle with an IED. The attack occurred after an earlier operation killed five Maoists in the region.
Raipur: In a tragic escalation of violence, eight jawans and a driver were killed in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district after Maoists detonated an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) targeting their vehicle. The attack occurred at around 2:15 pm near Kutru in the Bastar region as the jawans were returning from an anti-Maoist operation.
The victims, part of the District Reserve Guard (DRG)—a specialized unit combating Maoism in the state—were traveling in a Scorpio SUV when the powerful IED blast created a massive crater, demonstrating the intensity of the explosion.
Earlier in the day, security forces had launched an offensive in the Abujhmad region, killing five Maoists, including two women, and recovering automatic weapons such as AK-47s and Self-Loading Rifles. It was while returning from this operation that the Maoists struck back with the ambush.
Bastar BJP MP Mahesh Kashyap condemned the attack, calling it a "cowardly" act born out of desperation. "Our jawans are eliminating Maoists, and this attack is a desperate response. I extend my condolences to the families of the martyrs. Our government is committed to making Bastar Maoist-free by 2026 and will avenge this incident," he said.
The incident highlights the ongoing conflict in Chhattisgarh, where security forces have intensified operations to dismantle Maoist strongholds. Search and combing operations are continuing in the area.
