Washington, D.C. – Outgoing President Joe Biden has bestowed the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States' highest civilian honor, on 19 individuals who have made significant contributions to American society and the world. Recipients include former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Argentinian football icon Lionel Messi, actor Michael J. Fox, and philanthropist George Soros.

The award ceremony, held in the East Room of the White House, celebrated the achievements of cultural icons, humanitarians, and leaders who have shaped the values, security, and prosperity of the nation.

Honoring Excellence Across Fields

Lionel Messi, a global sports superstar, was among the awardees but could not attend the ceremony due to scheduling conflicts. President Biden praised the recipients as "extraordinary people" who have shaped the cultural and social fabric of the United States and inspired generations globally.

Clinton received a standing ovation for her lifelong dedication to public service. "As a lawyer, she defended the rights of children. As First Lady, she fought for universal healthcare and declared that women's rights are human rights. Her career has been dedicated to an eternal truth: America's ideals are sacred, and we must always defend and live by them," read her citation.

Canadian-American actor Michael J. Fox, celebrated for his advocacy for Parkinson's disease research, also received the honor, alongside Spanish-American chef José Andrés and Irish singer-songwriter Bono.

Posthumous and Controversial Awards

Posthumous honors were awarded to civil rights leader Fannie Lou Hamer, former Attorney General Robert Francis Kennedy, and businessman George W. Romney. Their family members accepted the awards on their behalf.

George Soros, 94, was recognized for his philanthropic efforts in advancing democracy, human rights, and social justice worldwide. His son, Alex Soros, accepted the award amid backlash from some Republican leaders and MAGA supporters. Critics, including former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley and Senator Tim Sheehy, condemned Biden's decision, citing Soros' controversial political influence.

Other Notable Recipients

The distinguished list of honorees included conservationist Jane Goodall, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, basketball legend Earvin "Magic" Johnson, designer Ralph Lauren, and scientist Bill Nye. President Biden remarked on the collective impact of the group: "You inspire and bring healing and joy to so many lives. You show what’s possible as a nation."

The ceremony marked President Biden's final opportunity to award the Presidential Medal of Freedom during his tenure, leaving a legacy of celebrating individuals who have made profound contributions to the world.
