After years of anticipation, Navi Mumbai has finally welcomed a family court, inaugurated on Saturday. This development coincides with the city court's elevation to a district judge and additional sessions court, accompanied by a civil judge (senior level) court in the same year.
The Belapur court building, initially functioning as a civil and criminal court since its inauguration in May 2017, has now introduced the family court. The inauguration ceremony, led by Bombay High Court Judge Bharti Dongre and presided over by Amit Shete, Acting Principal District and Sessions Judge, Thane, showcased not only a courtroom but also amenities such as a counseling room, a dedicated recreation space for children, and separate rooms for male and female advocates.
Sunil Mokal, President of the Navi Mumbai Court Bar Association, expressed, “The family court for the jurisdiction of Navi Mumbai has been established on the sixth floor of the court building and will be presided over by the honorable Judge Rachana Tehra."
He continued, "The upgradation of the city court at Belapur, previously a lower court handling smaller cases, has resulted in catering to a broader spectrum of cases. This will be beneficial for both advocates and residents, eliminating the need to travel to Thane or other distant courts, saving time, hassle, and money."
Khan Kaneez Khadijah, a recent advocate, remarked, “This court provides a conducive environment for practice and will offer valuable experience as everything is now consolidated under one roof.”
An anonymous litigant highlighted, “Not only will litigants spend less time in the court, but cases will also be expedited, offering a fast-track resolution and saving on hassles, expenses, time, and emotional trauma."
