Ram Shinde Set to Become Maharashtra Legislative Council Chairperson
BJP MLC Ram Shinde is set to become the Maharashtra Legislative Council chairperson unopposed, filling a post vacant since July 2022. His nomination, however, raised questions about Eknath Shinde’s absence.
Nagpur: BJP leader and Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) Ram Shinde is poised to assume the role of Chairperson of the Maharashtra Legislative Council, with his unopposed candidacy making the election a mere formality. Shinde filed his nomination papers on Wednesday during the ongoing winter session in Nagpur.
This development ends a prolonged vacancy in the council chairperson’s post, which has been unoccupied since July 2022, following the retirement of the previous chairperson, Ramraje Naik-Nimbalkar, from the undivided NCP.
Ram Shinde was joined by several key political leaders during the nomination process, including Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, state BJP president Chandrashekhar Bawankule, and other BJP leaders such as Chandrakant Patil and Jaykumar Rawal. Uday Samant of the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena was also present.
However, the absence of Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde at the event sparked speculation in political circles, raising questions about internal dynamics within the ruling coalition.
Shinde’s elevation to the chairperson’s post is expected to bring leadership and stability to the council, which has been without a chairperson for over a year.
