Mumbai Police issued traffic challans worth ₹89 lakh on New Year’s Eve, penalizing over 17,800 offences, including drunk driving, speeding, and helmet violations. Checkpoints and heavy patrolling ensured road safety during the celebrations.
Mumbai: As Mumbai welcomed 2025 with grand celebrations, the city’s traffic police were on high alert, cracking down on violations. A staggering ₹89 lakh worth of traffic challans were issued on New Year’s Eve, with e-challans documenting a total of 17,800 traffic offences across the city.
The Mumbai Traffic Police released a breakdown of violations, highlighting 2,893 cases of obstructing traffic flow, 1,923 instances of riding without a helmet, and 1,731 violations of jumping traffic signals. Public transport refusals accounted for 1,976 challans.
Speeding attracted 842 challans, while 432 drivers were fined for not wearing seatbelts. Drunk driving resulted in 153 challans, and 109 motorists were fined for using mobile phones while driving. Other violations included triple riding (123 cases), driving on the wrong side (40 cases), and dangerous driving (2 cases).
To maintain order and safety, Mumbai Police deployed eight Additional Commissioners, 29 Deputy Commissioners, 53 Assistant Commissioners, 2,184 Inspectors, and over 12,000 constables across the city. Checkpoints were set up to monitor drunk driving and troublemakers, and patrolling was intensified in crowded areas.
Mumbai wasn’t alone in its efforts to ensure safety during celebrations. Major cities like Delhi and Bengaluru also implemented robust measures, including extensive checkpoints and patrols, to tackle drunk driving and ensure road safety.
