The 2024 Lok Sabha elections, set to be the world's largest democratic exercise, will commence on April 19 and run through June 1, with results expected on June 4. Chief Election Commissioner Rajeev Kumar announced the seven-phase election schedule, emphasizing responsible social media conduct and a crackdown on fake news.
Simultaneous elections for Lok Sabha and state assemblies will be held in Sikkim, Odisha, Arunachal Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh, while Jammu and Kashmir remains excluded due to President's Rule since 2018.
Additionally, by-elections for 26 assembly seats across various states, including Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Tamil Nadu, will also be conducted.
Mr. Kumar warned against hate speech and urged for issue-based campaigns devoid of caste or religious targeting. He emphasized the need for transparency in political advertising by distinguishing it from news content.
To ensure adherence to these guidelines, the Election Commission has deployed 2,100 advisors. Moreover, special provisions will allow voters aged 85 and above, as well as individuals with 40% or more disabilities, to cast their votes from home, benefiting approximately 82 lakh voters.
This announcement follows the resignation of Election Commissioner Arun Goel, leaving the Commission with only the Chief Election Commissioner. Subsequently, retired Indian Administrative Service officers Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Gyanesh Kumar were appointed as Election Commissioners, further bolstering the Commission's capabilities.
