The State Bank of India (SBI) informed the Supreme Court on Wednesday that a total of 22,217 electoral bonds had been purchased and 22,030 redeemed by various political parties between April 1, 2019, and February 15, 2024. This disclosure came through a compliance affidavit filed by the SBI in response to the court's directive.
According to the affidavit, the SBI stated that it had provided all necessary details regarding the electoral bonds to the Election Commission of India, as per the court's instructions. This submission was made before the close of business hours on March 12.
The details furnished include the date of purchase for each electoral bond, the names of the purchasers, and the denominations of the bonds acquired. This comprehensive disclosure comes in the wake of heightened scrutiny and legal proceedings surrounding electoral bond transactions.
Electoral bonds have been a subject of debate due to concerns over transparency in political funding. The Supreme Court's decision to compel the SBI to provide detailed information about these bonds is seen as a significant step towards enhancing transparency and accountability in political finance.
