Stone-Pelting and Clash During Muharram Procession Injure 10 Cops and Damage Vehicles in West Delhi
Violent clash erupts during Muharram procession in Delhi's Nangloi, injuring police personnel and damaging vehicles. Learn about the measures taken by the police to disperse the unruly crowd.
A Muharram procession in the Nangloi area of west Delhi took a violent turn as a section of participants clashed with the police, resulting in injuries to about ten police personnel and damage to several vehicles. The incident occurred when the crowd was stopped from changing the designated route, as reported by news agency PTI.
According to officials, several 'tazia' processions were underway in the Nagloi region, with approximately eight to ten thousand people participating in the religious event. Trouble arose when a few organizers became unruly and attempted to divert the procession's pre-decided route. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer), Harendra Singh, stated that when the police objected to the route change, the participants started pelting stones at the police personnel.
In response, the police took measures to control the unruly crowd and resorted to a mild lathicharge to disperse them from the area. Several videos of the clash circulated on social media, capturing the tense situation and the stone-pelting incidents, which caused damage to public vehicles.
As a result of the clash, about ten police personnel suffered minor injuries, and some police vehicles sustained damage. However, the authorities assured that the situation in the area is now under control.
Muharram is an important month in the Islamic calendar, and Muslims commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, during this period. The 'tazia' processions are held to honor the memory of Imam Hussain, and they often involve carrying miniature replicas of his tomb. However, in this unfortunate incident, the religious event took an unexpected turn, leading to clashes and disruptions in the planned procession route.
Authorities are now investigating the incident and taking necessary measures to prevent similar situations in the future.
