In a significant political shift, Kailash Gahlot, former Delhi Transport Minister and a senior AAP leader, joined the BJP on Monday. Gahlot, who was once considered a close ally of Arvind Kejriwal, announced his decision in the presence of BJP leaders ML Khattar and Harsh Malhotra. He described his move as a difficult choice but emphasized that it was driven by his growing discontent with AAP's direction.
“This was not an overnight decision, nor was it due to pressure. I have always stood firm against challenges, but AAP's political ambitions have overshadowed its commitment to the people,” Gahlot said, rejecting claims of coercion by central agencies like the CBI and ED.
Gahlot criticized AAP’s inability to deliver on key promises, highlighting the failure to clean the Yamuna River and the controversy surrounding the ₹45 crore renovation of the Chief Minister’s residence, referred to by the BJP as “Sheeshmahal.”
AAP leaders allege that Gahlot’s switch was influenced by sustained investigations by federal agencies, but the BJP has dismissed these accusations. BJP leader Harsh Malhotra hailed Gahlot's move as a "turning point" ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections in February 2025.
Gahlot’s relationship with AAP had reportedly soured over the past year. His removal as Law Minister during a cabinet reshuffle in December and disagreements over Independence Day responsibilities deepened the rift.
Kejriwal has refrained from commenting on the resignation, delegating questions to senior AAP leader Durgesh Pathak, who alleged that Gahlot succumbed to pressure. Meanwhile, political observers see Gahlot’s exit as a significant loss for AAP as Delhi heads toward a critical election season.
