The Maha Kumbh Mela, regarded as the largest gathering of humanity in the world, commenced today in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. This iconic event, held every 12 years, is expected to attract over 40 crore (400 million) visitors, surpassing the combined populations of the United States and Russia. The event will continue until February 26, 2025, and has been organized on a sprawling 4,000-hectare area at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers, known as Sangam.
Economic Impact: A Revenue Maha Kumbh
Maha Kumbh 2025 is projected to generate up to Rs 2 lakh crore in economic growth for Uttar Pradesh, according to government and industry estimates. With an expected 40 crore visitors, the average expenditure per person of Rs 5,000 could contribute significantly to the state’s economy. If the per capita spending rises to Rs 10,000, the total economic impact could touch Rs 4 lakh crore. This represents an over 1% boost to both nominal and real GDP.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath highlighted that the 2019 Ardh Kumbh Mela, which saw 24 crore attendees, contributed Rs 1.2 lakh crore to the state’s economy. With an even larger turnout anticipated this year, the Maha Kumbh is expected to surpass previous benchmarks.
Sectoral Contributions to the Economy
The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has projected significant contributions across various sectors:

Cultural Significance and Astrological Alignment
The Kumbh Mela rotates every 12 years among four sacred sites in India: Haridwar, Ujjain, Nashik, and Prayagraj. This year’s Maha Kumbh aligns with auspicious astrological positions of the Sun, Moon, and Jupiter. Devotees believe the sacred bathing rituals, or Shahi Snans, purify the soul and cleanse sins.

Massive Preparations for a Global Audience
The Uttar Pradesh government has allocated Rs 7,000 crore for the 45-day event. Infrastructure includes 1,50,000 tents, 1,45,000 restrooms, 3,000 kitchens, and 99 parking lots. To ensure safety and crowd management, over 40,000 police personnel are deployed, complemented by AI-enabled surveillance cameras.
Indian Railways has added nearly 100 special trains making 3,300 additional trips to accommodate the influx of pilgrims. The Union Ministry of Culture and Tourism has set up a tent city offering Ayurveda, Yoga, and Panchakarma facilities to welcome over 15 lakh foreign tourists.
