Marnus Labuschagne's hopes of participating in the upcoming World Cup have suffered a setback as he has been dropped from Australia's one-day side. However, uncapped leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha and Western Australia all-rounder Aaron Hardie have earned spots in the extended 18-man squad for the tournament set to take place in India later this year.

Cricket Australia has unveiled an initial 18-player squad for the ODI World Cup, which will eventually be narrowed down to 15 players. The team's first task will be a five-match series in South Africa in September.

Labuschagne's exclusion is a notable development as he has been a consistent presence in Australia's ODI lineup, playing 30 out of 38 matches since his debut in January 2020. However, his batting average of 31.37 has led to his omission from the current squad.

The selected ODI squad includes players such as Pat Cummins, Sean Abbott, Ashton Agar, Alex Carey, and more. Cummins, who is also the ODI captain, is currently recovering from a fractured wrist and is expected to join the squad for the South Africa leg of the tour before the World Cup.

Mitchell Starc, who is recovering from a shoulder injury, has been cleared to play in the South Africa ODIs. However, Glenn Maxwell will miss the ODI matches in South Africa due to the impending arrival of his first child. He is set to rejoin the squad in India for a three-match ODI series.

Tanveer Sangha's selection has come as a surprise, as the 21-year-old has not played at the top level since a one-day practice match last September. His inclusion showcases the selectors' confidence in his abilities.

The ODI squad will continue to undergo evaluations, with final adjustments expected to be made by early September. The trimmed-down squad of 15 will be announced, and changes can be made up until September 28, pending ICC approval. The team's journey to the World Cup will commence with the South Africa series, followed by warm-up fixtures and a highly anticipated opening match against India on October 8 in Chennai.
