UK Raises Income Threshold by 55% for Family Visa Sponsorship

The UK government has significantly increased the minimum income requirement for British citizens and residents sponsoring relatives on a Family Visa. This move aims to reduce immigration and ensure newcomers contribute to the economy.

Effective April 11th, sponsors must earn a minimum annual salary of £29,000, a 55% increase from the previous £18,600. This threshold will rise twice more in 2024, eventually reaching £38,700 by early 2025, aligning with the Skilled Worker visa.

Home Secretary James Cleverly stated the government is addressing "unsustainable" immigration levels. He emphasized protecting British workers' wages and ensuring sponsored family members don't rely on taxpayers.

Impact on Applicants

Immigration lawyer Yash Dubal anticipates a surge in applications before further increases. He highlights the significant impact on those sponsoring spouses or partners, with the minimum income nearly doubling within a year.

Dubal criticizes the policy, stating, "They say you cannot put a price on love, but it seems the UK government has done just that."

The higher income requirement has sparked debate. While the government aims to control immigration, critics argue it unfairly restricts family reunification.
