PM Modi inaugurates GPAI Summit, emphasizes the importance of making AI transparent and easy to understand

In a landmark address at the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the urgent need for a global framework to ensure the responsible development of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. Modi expressed concerns about potential AI misuse, highlighting threats such as deepfakes, data theft, and the potential use of AI tools by terrorist groups.

Addressing diplomats, ministers, and industry participants, Modi urged caution and safety in advancing AI technologies. He stressed the importance of transparency and the need to eliminate bias in AI systems. The Indian Prime Minister called for the formulation and enactment of a global framework within a specified timeframe, comparing it to international treaties and protocols for other global affairs.

India, assuming the Chair of GPAI for 2024, aims to lead efforts in understanding AI challenges and opportunities while promoting its responsible evolution. Modi insisted that the global framework should be completed within the year, emphasizing the collaborative nature of the worldwide AI movement.

Highlighting the significance of inclusive AI development, Modi underscored the importance of human and democratic values in the process. He urged participation from the Global South, emphasizing that AI development should address existing inequalities and avoid exacerbating them.

Throughout the summit, Modi, along with Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Junior IT Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar, discussed the potential applications of AI in agriculture, education, and healthcare. The Indian leaders also focused on the need for regulation that ensures equitable results and the preservation of ethical considerations.

The Prime Minister brought attention to the linguistic diversity in India and proposed using AI to provide information in local languages, even suggesting the possibility of reviving dead languages through AI. He questioned whether AI could be employed to fill missing volumes on Vedic mathematics.

Addressing the challenge of deepfakes and cybersecurity threats, Modi called for increased credibility in AI-generated information. He proposed developing a "software watermark" to identify AI-generated content. The Prime Minister stressed the importance of a risk and harms-based approach to AI regulation, categorizing potential risks as red, yellow, and green.

As the industry continues to test and train AI models, Modi emphasized the need for standardization in evaluating models before their public deployment. The summit concluded with hopes for a consensus on AI regulation.
