During the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated India’s stance on resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict through peaceful dialogue. Meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the leaders exchanged warm greetings, with PM Modi emphasizing India's belief in non-violent resolutions to conflicts. He stated that India remains ready to assist in bringing peace, highlighting India's neutral approach to the ongoing war.
The summit brings together Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, and this year's meeting is expected to officially welcome five new members to the BRICS group. PM Modi also congratulated the group’s growing global influence.
This is Modi's second visit to Russia this year, following his July trip to Moscow for the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit, where he was honored with Russia's highest civilian award. Russia and India share a "special and privileged strategic partnership," as described by President Putin.
India’s balanced stance has allowed it to continue purchasing Russian oil, benefiting from discounted prices despite Western sanctions. Putin has positioned the BRICS summit as a success in showing that Russia is not isolated, with partnerships beyond Western influence.
A formal "Kazan Declaration" will be issued at the conclusion of the summit, further strengthening BRICS' position in global geopolitics.
