Parsik Hill in Navi Mumbai Faces Landslide Threat: Residents Sound Alarm

In the aftermath of the Irshalwadi landslide, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has pledged to address the concerns raised by environmentalists and local residents regarding Parsik Hill. The hill, located in close proximity to CIDCO headquarters, has been a subject of worry for various groups due to recent activities by a private builder under the pretext of beautification.

The NatConnect Foundation and Parsik Greens have been proactive in highlighting potential threats to the safety of Parsik Hill residents and buildings. These groups had alerted NMMC officials about the unauthorized excavation on the eastern slope, and an IIT report had confirmed the vulnerability of the soil in that area.

Vishnu Joshi, the convenor of Parsik Greens, expressed concerns about the state of the retention wall on top of the hill, which has been reportedly damaged. Additionally, there have been reports of encroachments by unscrupulous elements, raising further apprehensions. As per Jayant Thakur, the President of Parsik Hill Residents Association, there are already over a hundred buildings constructed on the hill, and with the clearance of aviation restrictions, there is a possibility of more constructions.

One resident Vinay Dubey Said: We, the residents of Parsik Hill, are deeply concerned about the recent activities and encroachments that pose a significant threat to our safety and well-being. We appreciate the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation's assurance to address our concerns and look into the situation. It is crucial for the authorities to take immediate action and protect our beloved hill and its residents from any potential hazards

The recent landslide in Raigad heightened the urgency of the situation, leading NatConnect director BN Kumar to write once again to the NMMC. In response, NMMC Commissioner Rajesh Narvekar has assured that the matter will be thoroughly investigated. On Friday, the civic body conducted a detailed examination of the endangered slopes, and City Engineer Sanjay Desai confirmed that a comprehensive study of the hill's condition is underway.

Given the potential risks posed by the ongoing activities and encroachments, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation's commitment to addressing these concerns has been welcomed by concerned parties. It remains crucial for the authorities to take swift and effective action to safeguard Parsik Hill and its residents from any further hazards.
