Mumbai police have imposed Section 144 in the city from December 20, 2023, to January 18, 2024, to prevent drone attacks on New Year's Eve. The order was issued by the Greater Mumbai Police Commissioner.
The order states that there is a threat of drone attacks by terrorist or anti-national elements on New Year's Eve. Such attacks could target VIPs, endanger the lives of ordinary people, or damage public property.
The order prohibits the use of drones, remote-controlled micro-light aircraft, paragliders, paramotors, hand gliders, and hot air balloons in the jurisdiction of the Brihanmumbai Police Commissionerate. These restrictions will remain in place for 30 days, from December 20 to January 18.

The Mumbai Police will be exempt from these restrictions for aerial surveillance, but they will need to obtain written permission from the Deputy Commissioner. Anyone who violates the order will be punished under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code.
The police have asked the media to disseminate the order to the public. The order will be displayed on notice boards at police stations, divisional ACP offices, zonal DCP offices, municipal ward offices, talukas, and ward offices.
