Guwahati: In a historic decision, the Assam government has renamed Karimganj district in the Barak Valley to Sribhumi, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Tuesday. The move reflects the cultural and historical significance of the region, as well as the aspirations of its residents.
Chief Minister Sarma highlighted that the name Sribhumi was inspired by Rabindranath Tagore, who referred to the area as "the land of Maa Lakshmi" over a century ago. "This fulfills a long-standing demand of the people," he said during a press conference.
The cabinet also reiterated its ongoing efforts to rename places lacking historical or dictionary relevance, emphasizing that this is part of a continuous process.
