In an unprecedented move, nearly 100 Members of Parliament (MPs) from both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were suspended on Monday for protesting in demand of a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the recent security breach in Parliament. This brings the total number of suspended MPs in the ongoing session to a staggering 92.
Opposition Fumes as Protests Spark Suspensions:
- 78 MPs, including Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members, were suspended for staging protests within the chambers.
- 14 MPs were previously suspended last week for similar demands.
- Lok Sabha suspensions include 30 members for the remainder of the session and 3 pending a privileges committee report.
- Rajya Sabha suspended 35 members for the ongoing session and 11 till the privileges panel submits its report.
- Derek O'Brien, Rajya Sabha MP, was suspended earlier for demanding a discussion on the breach.
Prominent Names Among the Suspended:
- Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Congress leader in Lok Sabha, and Gaurav Gogoi, deputy leader, are among the suspended Lok Sabha members.
- Trinamool MPs Kalyan Banerjee, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, Saugata Ray, and Satabdi Roy, and DMK's A Raja and Dayanidhi Maran are also on the list.
- Rajya Sabha suspensions include Congress's Jairam Ramesh and Randeep Singh Surjewala, DMK's Kanimozhi, and RJD's Manoj Kumar Jha.
Opposition Accuses Government of Dictatorship:
- Reacting to the suspensions, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury criticized the government's "dictatorial" behavior and likened Parliament to the BJP headquarters.
- He accused the government of ignoring its responsibility to answer questions and engage in productive dialogue.
- Gaurav Gogoi alleged that the BJP government is intentionally silencing the Opposition and claimed the Home Minister is evading accountability for the security breach.
Amidst Chaos, PM Speaks Out:
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his first remarks on the breach, acknowledged its seriousness and called for a "detailed investigation."
- However, he remained silent on the Opposition's demand for a ministerial statement in Parliament.
Speaker Upholds Secretariat's Authority:
- Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla reiterated that security matters within the House fall under the purview of the secretariat and defended its independence from government influence.
Security Breach Raises Deep Concerns:
- The December 13th incident, where intruders disrupted proceedings using smoke canisters, exposed significant vulnerabilities in Parliament's security apparatus.
- Six individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident, and Delhi Police have invoked the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act to strengthen their investigation.
This mass suspension, amidst accusations of political gamesmanship and concerns about transparency, marks a dark day for parliamentary proceedings in India. As the investigation into the security breach continues, the question of accountability and effective communication between the government and the Opposition remains unresolved.
