Jay Shah Takes Charge as ICC Chairman: A Vision for Global Growth and Inclusivity in Cricket
Jay Shah has officially assumed the role of ICC Chairman on December 1, 2024, with a vision to expand cricket globally. From securing cricket's place in the 2028 Olympics to boosting women's cricket, Shah's leadership marks a new era in the sport's future.
On December 1, 2024, Jay Shah officially took over as the Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), marking the beginning of a new chapter in global cricket governance. The 36-year-old, who previously served as the youngest honorary secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), succeeds Greg Barclay, who completed his four-year term. Shah is widely regarded for his contributions to the transformation of Indian cricket and has ambitious plans for the global expansion of the sport.
In his inaugural speech, Shah outlined his vision to strengthen cricket's position worldwide, focusing on inclusivity and broadening its reach across different formats. A key priority for his tenure is the inclusion of cricket in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, a milestone that could significantly boost the sport's global profile. He also emphasized his commitment to growing women's cricket, which remains an important area of development.
“I am deeply honored to take on the role of ICC Chairman and am grateful for the trust and support of the ICC Directors and Member Boards,” Shah said in his address. “Cricket is at a crucial juncture with multiple formats coexisting, and it is important that we accelerate the growth of women’s cricket while also preparing for cricket's inclusion in the 2028 LA Olympics.”
Shah, who previously played a pivotal role in the development of the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad—the world’s largest cricket venue—has consistently advocated for expanding the game’s infrastructure and international presence. “Cricket holds immense potential globally, and I look forward to collaborating with the ICC team and Member countries to take the sport to new heights,” he added.
However, Shah’s appointment comes amid significant challenges, particularly related to the 2025 Champions Trophy. The event, scheduled to be held in Pakistan, has faced scrutiny due to concerns raised by the BCCI, which has expressed reluctance to send Indian teams to Pakistan due to security and geopolitical tensions. As discussions about alternative hosting arrangements continue, Shah's leadership will be tested in balancing the interests of member nations and maintaining the integrity of the event.
While Shah has expressed his eagerness to overcome these challenges, his deep ties to the BCCI are also a point of contention for some, raising questions about potential conflicts of interest in his role as ICC Chairman.
Despite these hurdles, Shah remains determined to ensure the growth and global appeal of cricket. “I would like to thank Greg Barclay for his leadership over the past four years and the milestones achieved during his tenure. I look forward to continuing to build on these foundations and expanding cricket's reach on the global stage,” Shah concluded.
With the ICC now under his leadership, all eyes will be on Jay Shah as he navigates the complex landscape of global cricket governance, striving to make the sport more inclusive, engaging, and accessible to fans worldwide.
