India Women's Cricket Captain Harmanpreet Kaur Suspended for Two Matches due to ICC Code of Conduct Breaches
India Women's Cricket Captain Harmanpreet Kaur faces a two-match suspension by the ICC for code of conduct breaches during the match against Bangladesh. The incidents involved dissent and public criticism. Learn more about the penalties and its impact on the team.
In a recent development, Harmanpreet Kaur, the captain of India's women's cricket team, has been handed a two-match suspension by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for her involvement in two separate breaches of the ICC Code of Conduct. The incidents occurred during the third match of the ICC Women’s Championship series against Bangladesh in Dhaka on Saturday.
During the match, Kaur displayed frustration after her dismissal by hitting the wickets with her bat, in response to being adjudged caught at slip off spinner Nahida Akter in the 34th over of India's innings. This act of dissent led to a Level 2 offence, resulting in a fine of 50 percent of her match fee, along with three demerit points added to her disciplinary record.
Moreover, Kaur faced a Level 1 breach for engaging in "public criticism in relation to an incident occurring in an international match." After the game, during the presentation ceremony, she openly criticized the umpiring decisions.
Accepting responsibility for her actions, Kaur agreed to the sanctions proposed by Akhtar Ahmed, a member of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees. Consequently, no formal hearing was necessary, and the penalties were swiftly implemented.
A Level 2 breach usually carries a penalty ranging from 50 to 100 percent of the player's match fee and three or four demerit points. On the other hand, a Level 1 breach entails a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, up to a maximum of 50 percent of the player's match fee, and one or two demerit points.
Given the accumulation of four demerit points, Kaur received two suspension points, resulting in her suspension from either one Test match or two ODIs or two T20Is, based on the upcoming matches scheduled for the team.
Consequently, the suspension will affect her participation in the next two international matches. Kaur's absence during this period will be a notable setback for the India women's cricket team, and her leadership and skills will be missed on the field.
It is essential for players and captains to uphold the ICC Code of Conduct's standards to maintain the spirit of the game and ensure fair play. As the cricketing world continues to emphasize discipline and sportsmanship, such actions serve as a reminder of the need for players to adhere to the highest ethical standards on and off the field.
