A significant earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale struck the Hindu Kush region in Afghanistan, with tremors felt in parts of Delhi-NCR and Jammu & Kashmir. The earthquake, which occurred at 9:31 p.m., had a depth of 181 km, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS).
The epicenter of the earthquake was located approximately 418 km northwest of Jammu and Kashmir's Gulmarg district. No immediate reports of casualties or injuries were received.
Earlier in the day, at around 8:36 a.m., a separate earthquake measuring 5.2 in magnitude rattled Jammu and Kashmir's Gulmarg, with a depth of approximately 129 km, as reported by the NCS.
Afghanistan experiences frequent seismic activity, with an average of 560 deaths per year attributed to earthquakes. Over the past decade, more than 7,000 lives have been lost to earthquakes in the country.
The recent earthquake in Afghanistan follows a 4.3 magnitude earthquake that hit the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the early hours of August 3, as also reported by the National Center for Seismology.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and assessing any potential damages in the affected regions.
