BJP accuses Sonia Gandhi of ties to George Soros-backed group, raises concerns over foreign meddling in India

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday alleged that Sonia Gandhi, former Congress president, is associated with a group financed by the George Soros Foundation, accusing it of backing controversial ideas like Kashmir’s independence. The BJP claimed this connection highlights the influence of foreign entities on India’s internal affairs.

Sonia Gandhi, as co-president of the Forum of the Democratic Leaders in Asia Pacific (FDL-AP) Foundation, is allegedly linked to an organisation that has questioned India's sovereignty over Kashmir, BJP said in a series of posts on X. The ruling party also linked the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, chaired by Sonia Gandhi, to a partnership with the George Soros Foundation.

The BJP further alleged that Rahul Gandhi, during his criticism of the Adani Group, referenced reports by the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP)—a platform reportedly funded by George Soros-backed entities. They also pointed to Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who had previously referred to Soros as an "old friend."

Nishikant Dubey, a BJP MP, stated that he would question Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha, claiming OCCRP and Soros aim to destabilise India's economy in collaboration with opposition leaders. The allegations were made days after BJP accused the US "deep state" of colluding with OCCRP to damage India's image.

The US embassy dismissed the allegations, stating that the US government supports independent journalism and media freedom globally. They described the BJP's claims as "disappointing," asserting that US-funded programming does not influence editorial decisions.

OCCRP, an Amsterdam-based media platform, focuses on investigative reporting related to crime and corruption. The BJP's allegations have sparked debates on foreign influence in Indian politics and media.
