Bangladesh Asks India to Send Sheikh Hasina Back to Dhaka
Bangladesh requests India to facilitate the return of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to Dhaka through an official diplomatic note.
The interim government of Bangladesh has formally requested India to extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has been living in India since fleeing Bangladesh on August 5. Hasina, the leader of the Awami League, left Bangladesh following widespread protests that led to the collapse of her 16-year regime.
The request comes as Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has issued arrest warrants for Hasina and several of her former ministers, advisors, and military and civil officials. The charges include accusations of crimes against humanity and genocide.
Touhid Hossain, the foreign affairs advisor in the interim government, confirmed that a diplomatic note has been sent to the Indian government, stating that Bangladesh seeks Hasina’s return to face judicial proceedings.
Additionally, Home Advisor Jahangir Alam revealed that his office has sent a formal letter to India's External Affairs Ministry to facilitate Hasina's extradition. Alam emphasized that an extradition treaty exists between Bangladesh and India, allowing for the possibility of Hasina's return under this legal arrangement. The process is reportedly underway.
This diplomatic move highlights the growing tensions between Bangladesh's interim government and its former leader, Sheikh Hasina, as she faces serious legal challenges back home.
