UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson Fatally Shot in ‘Planned Attack’; Police Launch Extensive Manhunt
UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was fatally shot in a targeted attack outside a New York hotel. Police are investigating potential motives and have launched a manhunt for the masked shooter.
New York: UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, 50, was shot and killed outside the New York Hilton Midtown hotel early Wednesday morning in what police have described as a "targeted" attack. The fatal shooting, which occurred at approximately 6:45 a.m., has sent shockwaves through the corporate and healthcare sectors.
Details of the Incident
According to surveillance footage released by the New York Police Department (NYPD), Thompson was approached from behind by an unidentified man wearing a facemask. The attacker began firing multiple 9-millimeter rounds into Thompson's back. When the firearm malfunctioned, the shooter cleared it quickly and resumed firing.
Even as Thompson lay slumped on the sidewalk, the assailant walked past him before fleeing the scene on a Citi Bike. Thompson was rushed to Mount Sinai West Hospital in critical condition and was pronounced dead at 7:12 a.m.
Police Investigation Underway
NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny confirmed that the attack appeared premeditated. Speaking at a press conference, Kenny stated, “We are actively investigating this as a planned attack. Our team is interviewing family members, employees, and associates and reviewing social media for possible motives.”
Authorities have deployed drones, dogs, and an extensive police presence in their search for the shooter, who was last seen entering Central Park. DNA evidence is being collected from items left at the scene, including a water bottle purchased by the suspect at a nearby Starbucks and ammunition casings ejected during the shooting.
The gunman's proficiency with firearms, demonstrated by his quick clearance of the weapon's malfunction, has drawn attention. Kenny added, “We cannot yet confirm whether a silencer was used, but the suspect’s handling of the firearm suggests a certain level of expertise.”
Threats Against Thompson
Brian Thompson’s wife, Paulette Thompson, revealed to NBC News that her husband had been receiving threats, which she believes may be linked to insurance-related decisions made by UnitedHealthcare. “The police have informed me this was likely a planned attack,” she said while consoling her children.
UnitedHealthcare, one of the largest health insurance providers in the U.S., has faced criticism and controversy over the past year. A source familiar with the investigation confirmed that the company had received threats against Thompson previously, though it remains unclear whether the threats were connected to this attack.
Shooter’s Profile and Evidence
The suspect, wearing a facemask at the time of the shooting, purchased a water bottle at a Starbucks near the crime scene before carrying out the attack. Police are analyzing DNA evidence from the discarded water bottle and ejected ammunition casings in hopes of identifying the killer.
The NYPD has not ruled out any motives and is exploring both personal and professional connections. Investigators are working closely with Minnesota law enforcement, where UnitedHealthcare is headquartered, to uncover additional leads.
Corporate and Public Reaction
Thompson’s death has stunned the corporate world, with UnitedHealthcare issuing a statement mourning his loss. The CEO, widely regarded as a key leader in the healthcare industry, had been instrumental in navigating the company through recent challenges.
